THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE

what's the big idea?

The approach

Defining the Big Idea is the single most important strategic exercise you can do for a brand. In hospitality, B2B, or digital spaces, the Big Idea isn’t a catchy marketing tagline; it is the organizing conceptual filter for everything the business does.

If a brand doesn’t have a clear Big Idea, it suffers from “schizophrenic execution”. The website looks like a slick tech startup, the physical interior feels like a traditional country pub, and the tone of voice sounds like a corporate lawyer.

To define yours, you need to strip away the fluff and find the intersection of three lenses

The Three lenses

It takes bravery and patience. The Lansdowne needed a brand, something unique in the market. Something respectful of the past but forward thinking and flexible to take the business forward for years to come. It needed a big idea.

THE THREE LENSES

The Discovery Lens

The real truth

What is structurally, historically, or operationally undeniable about the brand? Tell the truth. you will be found out eventually.

The Analysis Lens

Finding the void

Look at the immediate geographic or digital competitors. Where are they all clustering? More importantly what space have they missed. what can you own.

The transformational lens

The intangible quality

What is the exact transformation the customer pays for? They rarely pay for just “a bed” or “a widget.” They pay for status, frictionless speed, escapism, or certainty.

The Discovery Lens

This lens allows us to see everything the brand currently is. Not what it eventually becomes, but the true mirror. Only by accepting what you are, warts and all can you truly move onward and upward. I will look at your current brand – there will be good, there will be bad, there may even be ugly. Once the initial picture is defined, we can move on.

The Analysis Lens

Next I will look deeply into the market, the competition. There will be commonalities, there will be things each of your competitors will try to own as their own truth. It won’t necessarily be yours. But I will help you in the next phase define that intangible, undeniable, and make it real. There will be gaps and opportunities. This is the unique space you can own like no other.

The Transformational Lens

Knowing where you came from, and where the opportunity exists is key. Aligning these two factors to a new truth that could only be you. This is the point when you become a brand you can feel, taste and hear. How exciting.
